Spectate 2: on-call, escalation branches and a new dashboard

A rebuilt Spectate: on-call schedules, escalation paths that branch, new monitor types, failure screenshots, the Slack app, much better status pages and simpler pricing.

2 min read

Spectate 2 is live. We rebuilt the platform from the ground up: a new API, new checkers, a new dashboard and new status pages. Your monitors, hosts, status pages, incidents and history came along.

On-call and escalations

  • On-call schedules with rotation layers, handoff times, weekday and time windows, and overrides. See who's on call now and for the next two weeks.
  • Escalation paths as a visual flow: notify a channel, page whoever is on call, wait, open an incident.
  • Branches split a path on severity, working hours, the alert's source or its labels. Steps can wait until working hours begin.
  • Phone calls with press 1 to acknowledge, SMS, and Telegram with acknowledge buttons.
  • Alert sources: Grafana, Prometheus Alertmanager, Sentry, a generic webhook and email fire alerts through the same paths.

Monitoring

  • New monitor types: TCP (with TLS and banner checks), DNS (record values and "answer changed" alerts), and SMTP, IMAP and POP3.
  • Certificate chains are now checked from our checkers, intermediates included, with alerts for hostname mismatches, untrusted chains and issuer changes.
  • Failure snapshots: when a website goes down, the checker that saw it keeps the response and takes a screenshot from the same region.
  • Alert emails, Slack, Teams, Discord, Telegram and Pushover messages now explain what went wrong and include a chart of the response times around the failure.
  • A new open-source host agent with an offline spool and signed updates. Agents you already run keep working.

Incidents and Slack

  • The Slack app opens a channel for every incident, keeps the timeline in sync both ways, and lets you publish to your status page from Slack.
  • Roles, severities, a stage tracker and postmortems on every incident.

Status pages

  • Component status now follows incident impact timelines and maintenance windows, with exact start and end times in the uptime bars.
  • 8 themes, 8 fonts and your own colours, with text kept readable.
  • Six languages for visitors, chosen from their browser.
  • Private pages with an access link, password protection, a Statuspage-compatible JSON API, live share images and a status favicon.
  • Visitors can report a problem, and you get an alert when traffic to your page spikes.

A calmer dashboard

The new dashboard is quiet until something is wrong: a ⌘K palette with search, keyboard shortcuts and light and dark mode.

Pricing

Plans are now priced per monitor, with your whole team included from the Team plan. See pricing. Paying customers from the old platform keep their plan until the end of their paid period; we'll email you before anything changes.
